chris morrissey

Chris Morrissey is a songwriter, a bassist, a singer, a leo, an uncle, a lover of most cats and some dogs, a New Yorker, a Minnesotan, an avid yoga practicer, a coffee, beer and wine drinker, a restaurant frequenter, and joke teller/appreciator.

As a bassist, he's logged hundreds of thousands of miles touring five continents with the Jim Campilongo Trio, Mark Guiliana's "Beat Music", Ben Kweller, Andrew Bird, Dosh, Mason Jennings, Gretchen Parlato, Tony Scherr and most recently with five-time grammy nominee and multi-platinum selling artist Sara Bareilles, for whom he also acts as music director. In his time in that role, he's shared the stage with Sir Elton John, recorded with Cyndi Lauper, coproduced Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher" for the Oprah Winfrey Network, and penned the arrangement of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile" for the in memoriam segment of The 66th Annual Emmy Awards.

As a leader, Mr. Morrissey has released three records to high praise: "The Morning World" (2009, Sunnyside), "Cannon Falls Forever" (2011, self release) and "North Hero" (2013, Sunnyside).

In 2014, he was featured in Bass Player Magazine, joined the adjunct faculty at The New School For Jazz and Contemporary Music and received a residency commission from The Jazz Gallery for a work to be premiered this summer.

He performs regularly in New York City and lives in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in a room that a landlord would call "cozy".

    -Nate Chinen, New York Times

NEWS

FEB 2015

Chris has been hard at work on his commission piece for The Jazz Gallery. It is titled "Standard Candle", and will be comprised of samurai warriors Grey McMurray playing guitar and singing, Josh Dion playing drums and singing and Mike Lewis playing saxophone and singing. The work will be premiered at The Gallery on June 12th and 13th.

Along with Jason Rigby and Shai Maestro, Chris recently finished recording the Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet record at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. Said Mark after the session: "Thanks guys, that was great." It will be out in the spring, and some trips are already being planned for spring summer and fall.

A new trio has formed to play Chris's rocksingin' songs. Josh Dion and Grey McMurray will join him for 4 dates at rockwood in February and March.
